Black Butte Lake:

Northern California's Hidden Gem for Photographers and Outdoor Lovers

If you've driven I-5 through the Sacramento Valley, you've probably passed the exit for Orland a hundred times without stopping. That's a mistake — because just a few miles west of town sits one of the most underrated outdoor destinations in all of Northern California: Black Butte Lake.

I've lived in this area since 2019 (We lost our retirement home in the Paradise, CA Campfire in 2018), and I still find new angles and new light out there every time I visit. Here's what you need to know if you want to explore it — and why it deserves far more attention than it gets.

What Is Black Butte Lake?

Black Butte Lake is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir tucked into the rolling oak woodland hills west of Orland, California in Glenn County. Created by the damming of Stony Creek, it covers around 4,500 acres when full and sits at roughly 670 feet elevation — low enough to stay accessible year-round, unlike the higher Sierra lakes that snow in from October to June.

It's surrounded by open grassland, blue oak savanna, and chaparral — a landscape that looks nothing like the forested mountain lakes most people picture when they think "California." That contrast is exactly what makes it so photogenic.

The Light Out Here Is Special

For photographers, the Sacramento Valley's wide-open skies and flat terrain create something you don't get in the mountains: dramatic, unobstructed light at golden hour. At Black Butte Lake, the western hills catch the last rays of the afternoon sun while the water reflects everything above it — cloud formations, color gradients, the silhouettes of oaks along the shoreline.

I shoot with a Leica Q2 and Sony A7III out here, and honestly the lake rewards both wide-angle and longer focal lengths. Early morning fog in the valley often rolls in off the water between October and March, creating moody atmospheric conditions that can make a simple shoreline shot look almost otherworldly.

My favorite time to shoot: the hour before sunset, October through February, when the grass is green from the first rains and the sky does things that are hard to believe.

What to Do at Black Butte Lake

Beyond photography, the lake offers a genuinely full outdoor experience:

Hiking: The Buckhorn Trail loops around much of the lake's south shore — it's relatively flat, easy to navigate, and gives you consistent water views throughout. Great for trail running too. The Orland Buttes Trail on the north side is shorter but offers elevated views that are worth the extra effort.

Birdwatching: This is one of the best spots in Glenn County for birds. White pelicans, osprey, great blue herons, double-crested cormorants, and a rotating cast of migratory waterfowl depending on the season. If you have a long lens, bring it.

Fishing: Bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill are all present. The lake has two boat ramps and is popular with local anglers, especially in spring.

Camping: There are two campgrounds managed by the Army Corps — Buckhorn and Orland Buttes — with sites ranging from primitive to full hookup RV spots. Reservations available at recreation.gov.

Swimming: A designated swim beach at Buckhorn is open in summer. Uncrowded compared to anything near Shasta or Tahoe.

Getting There

Black Butte Lake is about 9 miles west of Orland, CA. From I-5, take Exit 603 (Orland/Black Butte Lake) and head west on County Road 200. The drive takes you through classic valley farmland before the terrain opens up into the oak hills around the reservoir.

From Chico it's roughly 35 minutes. From Redding, about 45. From Sacramento, you're looking at just under two hours.

Why It Stays Under the Radar

Honestly, I think Black Butte Lake flies under the radar because it doesn't fit the California outdoor destination template. No towering peaks, no dramatic waterfalls, no famous trail names. What it has instead is quiet — genuine quiet — and a kind of honest, unpretentious beauty that rewards the people willing to slow down and pay attention.

The photography I've made out here is some of my most honest work. Not chasing iconic shots, just watching what the valley light does to still water and open land.
